The Old Dyers Yard

In the middle of the buzy main street of Ebeltoft you find the Old Dyers Yard.

The dyehouse was working from 1772-1788 and again from 1824 until about 1920, and here the yarn and clothes from the inhabitants were dyed.

In the former times the dyers used vegetables dying materials, and the black flag over the door signalised that it was a professionall dyehouse, because the genuin black color was very difficult and expensive to obtain.

Indigo, as we know from blue jeans, was the most important dying material, as well as other exotic materials as for example cochenille (a bog living on cactus), that gives red colours.

The last dyer lived in The Dyers Yard until he died in 1959, and from 1976 it has been part of Ebeltoft Museum.
